Task Initiation - Getting started with ADHD
Nov 15, 2024The number one issue that most folks with ADHD find challenging is getting started. This is called task initiation, and it’s a known executive functioning skill that tends to be the most troublesome for ADHD humans. I forget who it was, but someone explained executive functioning skills as the skills needed to execute a task and it finally made sense to me, so I’m sharing it here with you.
Now, I am of the mindset that procrastination isn’t always bad, nor is it bad for all people. There are some folks who might say that procrastination is putting off future feelings of failure and it’s something that people do as a result of failing at points in their life, and now make the assumption that they will fail, and putting something off is a way to avoid those future feelings of failure. I’m sure that’s very much true for some people and won’t attempt to negate that. That’s something to work through with a therapist, if you have the resources to access that.
There are also people who thrive by procrastinating. That’s actually how I am. I tend to do things at the last minute and produce (woof I hate that word sometimes lol) some of my absolute best work when it’s at the last minute. To those people, I say that working with a therapist or coach to unshame the part of you who thrives on waiting until the last minute, might be a good first step.
But what if you just want to learn how to get started? Maybe you just need a plan to help you practice task initiation and you’re ready to learn how.
Because think about it, if you can’t even get started, how will anything get done?
And therein lies a lot of the frustration and problem.
